We are at Finca El Yalú and the cold is unbearable. You could see it on my face. I think to myself that I should have better equipment to handle the cold. I'm standing here in front of a berries plantation. I see some green, and yellow berries, and some purple and red berries. There is also a white flower.
Yesterday was amazing I hadn't seen my friends for 5 days, I had missed them so much I probably gave them the strongest hug ever, I was very happy and so were they. The ride to El Yalú was very fast and ok, I sat next to Grace and we had a very interesting conversation, about her relationship with her parents and I couldn't help it to feel related with her situation, since things between us haven't been that good. When we arrived I assigned myself as volunteer to be the captain of our cabin, so we met with Bert and the other 3 captain to be instructed with the following activities. Karen gave us a quick tour of the place, so we would later give it to the members of our cabin. Afterwards Andrew told us a short story about what things should we be interested in while in our nature expedition. From plants, animals, to trees. Sebas was my partner, and I picked him because we haven't really met. We started our nature walk and we got to talk about what brought me to Guate and what brought him to the MPC. After a little while we started to look at Salvia trees, which had a particular "glue" and smell. Then we became interested in butterflies, so much that I saw a plant that had her leaves arranged as a butterfly. Later on, we could capture pictures from the transparent butterfly wings, and Hana ended up catching her, as my command. As we were walking back to the meeting point we saw 2 butterflies papalotea, with a pink remark on her bottom wing, Sebas catched her, to my command as well. I felt a mixed of emotions, I was happy because I though I could finally start my collection. Then I felt sad, because of the meaning they represent (liberty), and here I was privatizing them from their nature to be free. After talking to Alison, she told me about a procedure there is to follow for the collection, and then I thought it over (well after 6 hours) and decided to set them free and they fortunately could go back to their nature. In the nature walk I also learned about cows, and about natural selection that makes them survive, things such as the tail to keep away flies from sucking blood from them. The way their eyes are placed, to see predators more easily and other things. It was great that conversation with Andrew, it made me think so much in the natural selection we have evolved to be as the human beings we are now.
There was one day in which we did canopy. It was my first time, and I was feeling so many things at the same time. I overecame my fear of doing things that takes a lot of courage, and trusted in the system that I was going to be safe. And I was, and it was one of the most beautiful things I've experienced. Feeling small, big, and free at the same time. Just thinking about it makes my adrenaline rush again!!!!
