WE THE LIVING
PREFACE
The basic cause of totalitarianism is two ideas: men’s rejection of reason in favor of faith, and of self-interest in favor of self-sacrifice.
The end result is thought control, starvation and mass slaughter.
The highest ranking christians in Europe were the first practitioners of western totilitarianism. They considered it a new kind of state, and offered it to the future as a possibility to consider.
Since no one is born with any kind of talent, and therefore, every skill has to be acquired. Writers are made, not born. To be exact, writers are self-made.
I could not understand how any man could be so brutalized as to claim the right to dispose of the lives of others, nor how any an could be so lacking in self-esteem as to grant to others the right to dispose of his life.
How many of such five year plans will you need before you begin to understand? That depends on your intellectual honesty and your power of abstraction.
Do you consider it moral to treat men as sacrificial animals and to rule them by physical force?

Chapter 1
Kira traveled by train from Crimea to Petrograd. 1922. Railroads have not been organized. The civil war had come to an end. Trains didn’t had any schedule, people would sleep on the station for weeks up until one train came, when it did they ran to get it sometimes leaving bagages, children behind.
Kira traveled with his father Alexander Dimitrievitch Argounov, Galina and Lydia.
Galina Petrovna: kira’s mother. Owned a French book.
Lydia: kira’s elder sister.
Four years that the aurgounov family left Petrograd, because their teztile factory was nationalized in the name of the people. As well as the national banks, were their savings were emptied.
The south was in the hands of the white army.
Kira is 18.
She did not remember- because she didn’t listen.
I was thinking in a big city where so much is possible and so many things can happen to you.
It was discovered that the passenger coach in which the argounov family traveled could go no farther more.

Chapter II
They arrived Petrograd, they are back after 5 years of war, and they have seen it all destroyed, stores with bullet holes, broken windows, no signs.
They went to maria petrovna, galina sister’s house.
Maria started telling the family about the ration cards- which was no easy because she was not employed anywhere they only received 2 a month.
It seems interesting the attitude of kira, like indifferent or like she doesn’t notices what she eats, where she is or things, she seems like lost, or also don’t appreciate what she had in her time.
New Economic Policy: they allow private stores, but they charge you ten times more than the ration cooperatives. People couldn’t affordt it. Neither the theather.
No faith no will.
At the rate that new paper money is going down. Inflation.
Kira says she wants to be an engenieer because she wants to build what she wants to build.
Steel is steel, she doesn’t have to learn any lies, most of the other sciences are someone’s guess, and someone’s wish, and many peoples lies.
Exactly to whom is it that you owe a duty? To society. What is society? Society kira is a stupendous whole”. If you write a whole lline of zeroes, its still nothing.
“I fear for your future Kira. Its time to get reconciled to lilfe. You won’t get fat with those ideas of yours”… that “depends on what direction I want to go.” (A conversation with his cousin Victor, who is very socialist).

Chapter III
Marx-lenin. In union lies our strength.
Kira went for her labour book, which had to be stamped when received a job, left job, moved of apt or into one, got a bread car, went to school or got married.
Instead of a passport it was a permit to live. Labor-life were considered synonimus.
It seemed that the words she said were ruled by the will of her body and that her sharp movement were the unconscious reflection of a dancing, laughing soul. So that her spirit seemed physical and her body spiritual.
The first thing that kira learned abut life and the firs thing that her elders learned, dismayed about kira, was the joy of being alone.
I think that when in doubt about the truth of an issue, it’s safer and in better taste to select the least numerous of the adversaries.
I know a little bit more about kira she is an adventurous girl that enjoys being alone, and has a strong sense of self due to a reading about vikings. She went to get her labor book, and when every time they wrote something about her the third person telling the book starts describing the more detailed aspects of kira. It seems like is someone who knows kira very well, and describes her uniqueness. The labor book had a hammer and a crossed sickle.

CHAPTER IV
The Argounovs had found an apartment.
It is in very bad state.
A man of culture, has to be, above all, a man attuned to his century.
Victor tried to persuade kira in thinking like him. There was no way kira could deny her liberty.
Victor left her and kira had to walk alone into the dark streets of Petrograd.
Heard the song of the broken glass. Encountered a man accompanied her
If one loses that appetite, why still sit at the table (for life)
This guy thought she was a street women because she acted out, and after she said she was not he presented himself as leo and told her he was leaving Petrograd but that they should meet back in one month nov10 at 3pm. Kira first felt the love in her fingertips down.

Chapter V
She never had any thought of him beyond the one that he existed. But she dound it hard to remember the existence of anything else.
The family didn’t had anything to eat, no water pipe served, and an officer came in and announced they had to pay 50,000 ruples for the pipe.
Kira encounters a women that started to encourage her to join the voting for the student counsil, and to unite with women of the Technology Institute. Kira makes clear to her that she wants to study just for her not to render some service to the nation. Kira did not vote. Comrade sonia began her speech by saying that they need to stand up for the trights and speak their proletarian will. Kira first heard the “internationale” she had a discussion with an officer for talking her opinions out loud. She was very brave in the way she answered him back.
There is a lack of wood.
Vili showed Kira the collection of czar bills. “don’t ever look back. The past is dead, but there is always a future. The is always a future.
Vava came in to show the family fresh poweder from france which was a payment to his doctor father. They promimsed her to bring her lipstick from abroad, maria told her she wouldn’t dare to use it, but she insisted that probably a little because abroad was perfectly ok.
Kira asked who was a boy that she thought she knew and victor told her to be careful with him because he was a G.P.U.

Chapter VI
Nov 10 came and kira went to the place, minutes after Leo appeared. They chatted about why she wanted to build skyscrapers and she answered for admiration. Leo said that he didn’t want to believe anything in life. He must fight.
But I have something I cant sell and cant lose and it cant be nationalized. I have a future. A living future. -Vasili
One can learn anything in an emergency
There is no such thing as duty, if you know that a thing is right, you want to do it. If you don’t want to do it- it isn’t right. If its right and you don’t want to do it-you don’t know what right is and youre not a man.
I’ve never wanted things unless they could help my cause. It is my cause.
For one reason mainly, chiefly and eternally, no matter how much your party promises to accomplish, no matter what paradise it plans to bring mankind. Whatever your others claims may be, there’s one you c ant avoid, one that will turn your paradise into the most unspeakable hell: your claim that man must live for the state.
What better purpose can he live for? Really? This is a question by comrade taganov to kira.
“don’t you know that there are things, in the best of us, which no outside hand should dare to touch? … don’t you know that we live only for ourselves, the best of us do, those who are worthy of it? Don’t you know that there is something in us which must not be touched by the state, by any collective, by any number of millions”.
How much you have to learn. -Kira to Taganov
We do, we, act, we build

"You see, you and I, we believe in life. But you want to fight for it, to kill for it, even to die- for life. I only want to live it.
"It's a rare gift you know, to feel reverence for your own life and to want to be the best, the greatest, the highest possible, here now for your very own. To imagine heaven and then not dream of it, but to demand it."
Because you see, God- whatever anyone chooses to call God- is one’s highest conception of the highest possible. And whoever places his highest conception above his own possibility thinks very little of himself and of his life. It’s a rare gift, you know, to feel reverence for your own life and want the best, the greatest, the highest possible, here, now, for your very own. To imagine a heaven and then not to dream of it, but to demand it.
Both Leo and Kira undressed themselves in the cabin were they were going to sleep to leave for Germany. They shared their intimacy and both felt incredibly joyous.

The union of socialist soviet republics is the kernel for the future growth of a world state.
Our power is in the tight welding of the collective
Did it ever occurred to you that I have a life to live- in my spare time>
The soviet state recognizes no life but that of a social class
One of the most important things in this chapter is that Leo lost his job because he wasn’t part of any union nor he shared the social ideas as others. He was looking for jobs and there were very stupid regulations, which limited him to obtain a job. He was offered to be a teacher of languages but for free as to serve the society. Kira and leo went through hard times, eating only bread in dinner. Kira attended the institute less times, and she encountered Andrei who had another scar, he had gone to a party labor and got it there from people trying to eliminate communism. Andrei thank kira’s cards.

Chapter XVI
Leo is getting worse of health, he was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Kira did everything in her power to get the money to send him south. It amazed her how it was possible that they gave little importance to the fact that he was going to die, and kira gave little importance to a trade union paper.
She had gone to the city with Andrei, they had so much fun when she returned she found leo kissing with vava, he was drunk. Kira understood.

But kira said she did, and they made love and Andrei asked her to stay till the morning and she couldn’t, because she had to return to Leo. She lied to Leo of how she received the money to sent him south, with everything paid, she said that she got the money from his uncle in Budapest, and she asked Andrei money for her family that was going through harsh times. Leo went away and she felt inside of her an immense sensation that she ran away to try to stop the train, and she was forced to the side.
PART II
Chapter I
Petrograd did not grow, it was born finished and complete. Petrograd is not acquainted with nature. It was the work of man.
Nature makes mistakes and takes chances, Petrograd is the work of man who knows what he wants. It was a monument to the spirit of man.
Petrograd does not need a soul. It has a mind.
Sometimes when im alone, I try to draw you in the air, like this, to feel as if you were standing before me.
Kira went to andrei’s house she was wearing a very nice red dress, she had a lighter which later on we know Andrei had given her. That day she gave her a perfume. She went there to tell him she couldn’t meet him in the night, and later on we know it’s because leo is coming tonight.

Chapter II
What she was doing to another man’s soul.
I don’t care what life is to be nor what it does to us. But it wont break us. Neither you nor me.
Kira went to the dounovs house, and to find that irina has a friend named sasha that thinks to be free. They get along with kira, and tells her the revolution must be almost over, because people are starting to awaken.
Kira went to the train station to pick up leo because he had sent her a telegram, and the train was late. In the afternoon of the next day leo came in and was very uncomfortable for the fact that kira had given back his health and he had nothing to give back just a healthy body. Andrei gave kira a job, of being a tour guide, he installed a telephone in her house “for the job”

Chapter III
To criticize we must understand.
And all those things, they have no meaning for anyone on earth but me, and when I’ve lived a life where every hour had to have a purpose, and suddenly I discover what it’s like to feel things that have no purpose but myself, and I see suddenly how sacred a purpose that can be, so that I cant even argue, I cant doubt, I cant fight it, and I know, then, that a life is possible whose only justification is my own joy-then everything, everything else suddenly seems very different to me.-andrei with love.
People create their own questions, because they’re afraid to look straight. All you have to do is look straight and see the road, and when you see it, don’t sit looking at it- walk. - andrei
And so my own existence was only the fight and the future. You taught me the present.- kira
Kira was looking for the moments to live the house from Leo and be with Andrei, everytime Leo hold her back and she couldn’t find any excuse, he wanted to hold her closely because there were many days without her. Tania came to look for Leo, she was a very luxurious woman with diamonds and Koko had a very important job in the Food trade. Kira felt a bit jealous that he was talking to a woman that was in the communist side. (what about her and Andrei)
The day that kira was going out and said to leo that she was going to her family’s house, and leo wanted to go, she interrupted him and gave him an excuse. When she heard the door bell, it was her parents visiting them, leo was very happy as well as them to see him so healthy. Kira still went out and met with Andrei, and went to the opera, they were talking about life and the toasted for andrei’s life.

Chapter IV
Leo is going to make business with the food trade guys. Antonina and the other one whom kira already met. It’s a big scan for putting leo in front of the face of any issue going on. Kira begged for him not to do it, and he insisted.
Chapter V
Pavel and the other guy who arranged to have leo working for the food company were talking about the business they’ve just made with leo. It seems they are taking advantage of him and he is really falling in the midst of becoming wealthier no matter how. The first day of the store they made a lot of money, and leo took the bunch of money of the caja registradora, and stuck the money in his wallet, he went to the market and asked for a gift for someone who he hated (i first thought it was to kira) and later we are aware that victor and marishka are getting married, so he bought a very expensive base and didn’t even asked the price. When he arrived home to come for kira, kira was dressing a black dress, who leo asked her to change into the velvet dress, she insisted because they were going to impress the communists that they had money, same happened when kira saw the gift, leo dropped it and it broke. They arrived to the wedding and Andrei met with kira and talked that they had long time since they didn’t see each other. Leo got very drunk, insulted kira “assuming” that she was her mistress, they got into a discussion with Andrei and he decided to take kira home, before they went to andrei’s house. The next day leo asked for her apologies, and said that he didn’t deserve her, and asked her why she was still with him.
Chapter VI
Come down to earth, to the prosaic task of economic reconstruction. Danger of being overidealistic- holding power for the sake of power.
Pavel has been elected vice-president of the railroad workers unions’ club of Leninism.
Why are you so empower to your own thoughts? Or is comrade taganov becoming an individualist?- sonia to comrade taganov
Irina and victor had a discussion when sasha left their house. Because victor knows about his counter revolutionary ideas and how if somebody else in the party knows, her political standing will be viewed much closer. The passport was rejected, and in the dark alleys, she couldn't pay the passport that could've taken her out of that misery. She have heard in those conversations that there were people who crossed the border walking, dressed in white and some of them were able to arrive to their destination, most of them got shot by the guards that are there watching out. She went in train and found Uncle Visili's in the train station who was selling saccarine tube that he has started to sell illegally perhaps, and he was glad to see her. They talked very little because she had to leave. The train ride was long, and she felt asleep holding to her baggage very tightly. She arrived to her destination and the people from a house she knocked the door and they took her in. They gave her food, she changed to the wedding gown and she left.
All the time she walked, she just thought of why she was doing these, her body came completely limb to the tiredness of her legs, but she was aware that one foot have to go in front of the other one simultaneously without stopping. Final Reflection of We the Living
Final reflection on we the living
It took me some time, in order for everything to sink in and let go of each character and be conscious that they are literally dead. Ayn Rand created the possibility for me to live throughout a time were the individual was suppressed and socialism ruled over Soviet Russia. I had the experience to live throughout a time of government intervention upon the decisions I would like to take regarding my future, little by little they took the responsibility off my shoulders and assumed my choices based on what they thought I value the most.
I am still amazed, to see this reflected not only throughout government intervention, I think that this socialist epidemic has reached governments only because individuals have been infested with this ideas first. The idea of giving somebody else the responsibility over your actions and decisions has been intrinsic throughout many generations that have made us become passive members of our lives.
The light of hope that was born within me after reading We the Living, was the sense of greatness in the self by accomplishing my desires of the future I want to pursue, while I am alive and awake. The amount of possibilities out there in the world, are there waiting for me to take part of, give my input, pursue my passion, follow my inner desire, to start to create something others will see value in it.
I cannot say it more clearly than, we live in a world of possibilities. A world that is ready to take in the ones who are brave enough to take the responsibility upon their own shoulders. I think to myself, and feel inspired as to how many lives I can influence by showing this greatness that lies within each of us, by acting as an individual in your own life, pursuing your own projects, living under your own set of values and do not interfere with private ownership of others. I want to teach future generations that we are capable of so much more than what we think in short term, but rather, thinking in long term effects of every decision and action, and the effect it will create in all environments and social groups of the world.
After all, we all share something, something that was given to us the day we were born, the individual I. Let’s not be fooled by those who think that “we” is greater and so you sell your soul to them for them to do whatever they think is “right” for you. It’s in our nature to live the process of life by learning through the experiences each of us create and experience, and to be the ones giving meaning and creating connections through out them. If government is up to take that responsibility, how is he to know each and every individuals needs and values, they assume they know what’s best for the collective only based on what they value for themselves, their own personal benefit. We must be careful with them, because they try any tool to suppress the ones trying to stand out on their own.
There are more good people in the world, than bad ones. The good ones have greater responsibility if they choose to change the course of humanity. By having small changes in their interactions with others that will create an impact on other’s mind. First step, you will let them think on their own by not giving them away answers to what you think is correct, make them question the things they’ve never questioned, and have adopted an answer from other person more “trained” than himself to give meaning to their lives.
We are the meaning makers of our own lives. Question yourself and your actions. Question children’s point of views, learn from them, they have greater sense of understanding that most grown ups do these days. What you will notice is that you will learn much more from others than what you thought you knew yourself. So, let’s adopt an intellectual humility and be compassionate towards others learning process, each of us has taken different paths, for different reasons, and each of us know exactly what we are after. It is just a matter to act with integrity, standing up for your own values, and pursuing your end. After reading we the living, I feel more alive than ever, I am a living being who can change the world; by every decision and action I decide to do. Go out there, be whoever you want to be, and influence others to have their own criteria.
